Kelvin Kiptum, breaking world record at Chicago Marathon

Kenyan marathon runner Kelvin Kiptum set an astounding new record. Completing the full 42.195 km marathon course in 2 hours, 35 seconds, Kiptum achieved a world record, reducing the previous record by a staggering 34 seconds. The previous world record was set by Eliud Kipchoge at the Berlin Marathon in September 2022, with a time of 2 hours, 1 minute, and 9 seconds. Kiptum's accomplishment is even more dazzling considering his relatively short marathon career.

Born in 1999, this was only Kiptum's third race participating in the full marathon course. His first full-course competition was the Valencia Marathon in December 2022, where he gained attention with an impressive time of 2 hours, 1 minute, and 53 seconds. In April of the same year, he achieved the second-fastest time ever recorded in history at the London Marathon, finishing in 2 hours, 1 minute, and 25 seconds. His record-breaking performance, just over five months later, is a testament to his tremendous training regimen. Known to run 300 km per week, Kiptum's coach mentioned in an interview, "He is dedicated to training. However, considering his career, we need to adjust his training volume to protect his longevity as an athlete." Nevertheless, Kiptum's routine is filled with eating, sleeping, and running.
